The local government election for the Chatham Islands Council will be held by postal vote on Saturday 8 October 2022.

This election consists of:

  • Election of Mayor
  • Election of eight Councillors (elected at large)

by a 'first past the post' electoral system. Candidate names will be listed in alphabetical order on the voting documents.

Nominations

Nominations for the above positions are open from Friday 15 July 2022 and must be made on the appropriate nomination paper for each position. You can obtain nomination papers and a candidate information handbook from the Council offices (13 Tuku Road, Waitangi), or you can find them on our local elections 2022 page. Please contact the Electoral Officer (above) for further information.

Completed nomination documents must be received by our Electoral Officer no later than 12 noon on Friday 12 August 2022.

Each nomination must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 incl. GST, payable by eftpos, cash, cheque or online banking (see the candidate handbook on the local elections page for requirements). Candidates are encouraged to submit a candidate profile statement and photograph for sending out with voting documents to electors. The requirements for profile statements and photos are set out in a candidate handbook. All nomination documents must be lodged together. Candidates should refer to the candidate handbook for further details.

Electoral Rolls

Chatham and Pitt Island residents can inspect a copy of the preliminary electoral roll to be used for the above elections at the Chatham Islands Council office, 13 Tuku Road, Waitangi during normal office hours from Friday 15 July - Friday 12 August 2022.

Electors may enrol or amend their enrolment details on the residential electoral roll by:

Updates to the preliminary electoral roll close at 5pm on Friday 12 August 2022.
Applications for registration as a ratepayer elector are to be made on the non-resident ratepayer elector enrolment form available wherever copies of the electoral rolls are displayed and must be returned to the Chatham Islands Council Electoral Officer before 5pm Friday 12 August 2022.
