Let’s work together to reduce, recycle and upcycle our waste

What’s happening?

As we move towards utilising the landfill at Owenga, there will be changes at the Te One Waste Management Transfer Station.

What do I need to do?

Separate your waste according to the following categories and use the appropriate self-drop bins.

  • Cleaned bottles/jars, milk cartons, aluminium cans and tins
  • Cleaned plastics (separating by number will come later)
  • Polystyrene
  • Food waste
  • Cardboard boxes broken down and dry (remove tape if possible)
  • Rope, electronics, wood, scrap metal etc.

Why is this happening?

In order to create a more sustainable future on the Chatham Islands we need to be more vigilant with our waste disposal, so that we can bale the recyclables to move them offshore.

What else is coming?

Looking to the near future Council are exploring options for:

  • A purpose built “Mitre 12” building which will include areas to drop off clothing, books, building and plumbing materials etc.
  • Council branded rubbish bags for general rubbish.
